This wide-field image frames the end stars of the Big Dipper's handle — Mizar at top,and Alkaid at bottom — and to also include in the frame the bright galaxies Messier 101 (at left) and Messier 51 (at lower right, aka the Whirlpool Galaxy). They are small on this image scale but the image serves for a finder chart illustration of the location of these galaxies relative to the Handle. The famous double star Mizar and Alcor is also obvious at top,as is the red giant star 83 Ursa Majoris. The field is 10° x 15°,so wider than binoculars.

This frames the rich region of the southern Milky Way in the small constellations of Norma (at centre) and Ara (at left and extending to the top). The bright Norma Starcloud is at bottom with the rich star cluster NGC 6067 ermbedded in it. The large red nebula at top is NGC 6188, aka RCW 108, that surrounds a loose star cluster NGC 6193. The nebula has become known as the Fighting Dragons of Ara, from its apperance in close-up images. To the right of the large nebula is the small double-lobed planetary nebula NGC 6164, though it is tiny at this image scale.

This is Messier 1, the first entry in Charles Messier's 18th century catalogue of deep-sky objects that were not to be mistaken for comets, his real quest. It is also NGC 1952, or the Crab Nebula, from the Earl of Rosse's 19th century description and naming. It is north of the lower horn of Taurus the Bull. This is a remnant cloud of debris expanding away from a supernova explosion that was witnessed in 1054 CE. All that's left of the progeniitor star now is a neutron star forming a spinning pulsar at the heart of the explosion debris. Some red H-alpha tendrils are obvious around the extremity

This is a portrait of a field in the "club" of Orion the Hunter, in northern Orion, that contains the emission nebula (at top) catalogued as Sharpless 2-262, or LBN 863, but known popularly as Lower's Nebula for its discovery in 1939 by the father and son team of Harold and Charles Lower. Below it just right of centre is the small, loose star cluster NGC 2169, with its stars arranged in a number 37 or XY pattern. It is sometimes called the Number 37 Cluster. At lower left is the rich star cluster NGC 2194. The small red nebula above NGC 2194 is Sharpless 2-269, with faint Sh2-267 above it. A r

There's no more colorful area of the deep-sky than this field in the head of Scorpius. A mix of red and magenta emission nebulas combine with blue reflection nebulas, and unique to this field, a yellow reflection nebula around the red giant star Antares at bottom. Dark dust lanes glow brown and yellow as well.

This frames the rich area surrounding the Galactic Centre, which is located at top centre here amid the dark lane of dust and above a small diffuse area of red nebulosity. To the left is the bright Sagittarius Starcloud, which contrasts with the dark lane that runs down the Milky Way. Nowhere else is there such a stark and sharp contrast between bright starclouds and dark lanes of dust. The star clouds show the yellowing effect of interstellar dust absorbing star light and reddening it.

This frames most of the intricate arcs and loops of the Vela Supernova Remnant (SNR), the remains of a star that exploded about 11,000 years ago. It is one of the closest SNRs to Earth, about 900 light years away. Most arcs and segments have no separate catalogue numbers, with the exception of the short straight Pencil Nebula, aka Herschel's Ray, in the lower left corner which is NGC 2736. It is the brightest segment of the Vela SNR visually in a telescope. The nebula complex is marked with lots of cyan arcs emitting oxygen III wavelengths, mixed with regions of red hydrogen-alpha emission.

This is the bright reflection nebula complex that includes Messier 78 (the largest blue-white nebula) and NGC 2071 above it. They are set in a region of dark clouds of interstellar dust, and framed by the red-magenta arc of the emission nebula known as Barnard's Loop, aka Sharpless 2-276. The small reflection nebula at upper left on the edge of another dark cloud is van den Bergh 62. The large star cluster left of centre on the edge of the Loop is NGC 2112.

The summer Milky Way over and reflected in the relatively calm water of Pyramid Lake in Jasper National Park, on a mid-October night. The Jasper Sky Tram adds the lights on Whistler Peak. Bands of airglow tint the sky with red. Lights from the Jasper townsite, still mostly unshielded sodium vapour lights as of 2022, add the skyglow at left. Altair is the bright star at top. The red Lagoon Nebula is just setting behind the mountain skyline. The slight wind rippled the water enough to prevent a perfect reflection.

Orion and the winter stars and constellations in a moonlit sky,on a chilly (-20°C) winter night on January 28,2023. Above Orion is Aldebaran and the Hyades star cluster in Taurus. Below Orion is Sirius in Canis Major. The red giant Betelgeuse and the blue giant Rigel stand out nicely above and below the Belt. Light from the first quarter Moon off frame illuminates the landscape. This serves as a good illustration of how the Belt stars in Orion point up to Aldebaran and down to Sirius.

The open star cluster NGC 1528,at left, accompanied by the emission nebula NGC 1491,at right, aka the Fossil Footprint Nebula, both in Perseus. The very red star below NGC 1528 is SY Persei. The faint nebula at centre is unidentified – the nebulas Sharpless 2-209 and Sharpless 2-206 are in the area but their positions on the TriAtlas do not coincide with the nebula recorded here. Nor is it marked on any other atlas I was able to check. But the TriAtlas might plot the Sharpless nebulas incorrectly. But photos on-line label this object as Sh2-209. The bright star at bottom right is Lambda Persei.

This is the California Nebula, aka NGC 1499,in Perseus near the star Menkib,or Xi Persei,at bottom. While this is primarly an emission nebula, there is dust in the periphery forming some faint reflection nebulosity. The main nebula emits strongly in not only the red H-Alpha wavelength but also the blue-green H-Beta wavelength, thus the pink or magenta colour.

At bottom left is the star cluster Messier 29, though looking a little lost in the rich starfields here. At top is the cluster IC 1311, looking more obvious than M29 but not observed visually and included in the NGC catalog. Odd. At far right are the large and loose star clusters NGC 6883

Venus, very bright as an evening star, shines over the old historic Atlas Coal Mine in the Red Deer River Valley, Alberta, near East Coulee. The mine buildings are the last standing from many coal mines that operated in the valley up until the 1970s. The Atlas Coal Mine is now a museum and National Historic Site.

The Veil Nebula complex in Cygnus, aka the Cygnus Loop or Cirrus Nebula. This is a remnant of a supernova explosion that occured 5000 to 8000 years ago. It features a mix of red hydrogen-alpha and cyan oxygen III emission for a colourful complex of lacy filaments. The components have the catalogue numbers of NGC 6992-5 (eastern component at left) and NGC 6960 (western component at right, through the star 52 Cygni),and NGC 6974 for the middle area at top called Pickering's Triangle.

The northern summer Milky Way setting over the mountains of Waterton Lakes National Park, Alberta, Canada, with warm golden lighting supplied by the rising waning Moon (behind the camera) illuminating the landscape and sky in a “moonstrike” effect. This is taken during the lunar “golden hour.”
